What Industrial Design Actually Is

Industrial design is the discipline of designing physical products — the things you can pick up, hold, use, and put down. Furniture, consumer electronics, medical devices, packaging, tools, vehicles, appliances. If it was manufactured and you have interacted with it physically, an industrial designer was involved in its creation.

The common misconception is that industrial design is primarily about aesthetics. It is not. Industrial design is about the intersection of form, function, ergonomics, materials, manufacturing processes, and cost — with aesthetics as an output of solving all of those things well, not a starting point.

A chair that looks beautiful but is uncomfortable is a design failure. A tool that works perfectly but injures the user over time is a design failure. Good industrial design is all of it working together.

Stage 1: Brief and Research

Every industrial design project starts with a brief — a clear definition of the problem being solved. What is the product? Who uses it? In what context? What does it need to do that no existing product does well enough?

Research follows: competitive analysis, user observation, ergonomic standards, manufacturing constraints, material options, and cost targets. The design process cannot start until the problem is fully understood.

This stage is where most failed products go wrong. Skipping research to get to sketching faster is one of the most expensive shortcuts a product company can take.

Stage 2: Concept Sketching

With a solid brief, ideation begins. Concept sketching is fast, iterative, and deliberately non-precious. The goal is to generate many directions quickly — not to produce a finished design, but to explore the possibility space.

Good industrial designers can produce dozens of concepts in a day. Most will be discarded. A few will have something worth developing. Sketching is the cheapest way to make and test design decisions — far cheaper than modelling, prototyping, or manufacturing.

At iter8d Studio, we use both traditional hand sketching and digital sketching depending on the project. The medium matters less than the speed and volume of ideas being explored.

Stage 3: Concept Development and Refinement

The strongest concepts from sketching are developed further. This means working through the details: proportions, material junctions, mechanisms, ergonomic dimensions, surface treatments. Rough sketches become resolved drawings.

Client review typically happens at this stage. Two or three refined concepts are presented, and one direction is selected for full development. This is also where manufacturing conversations begin — can this be injection moulded? What are the tooling costs? Does this assembly make sense?

Stage 4: 3D Modelling

The selected concept moves into 3D modelling. This is where the design becomes precise. Every dimension is defined. Every surface is modelled. Every mechanism is resolved.

3D modelling serves two purposes: it allows photorealistic renders to be produced for marketing and client approval, and it forms the foundation of the CAD files that will go to manufacturing.

The model must be built with manufacturing in mind. Draft angles for injection moulding. Wall thicknesses that work for the chosen material. Assembly sequences that make sense on a production line. A beautiful 3D model that cannot be manufactured is useless.

Stage 5: Photorealistic Rendering

Before a single unit is manufactured, photorealistic renders allow the product to be seen, evaluated, and approved in full detail. Renders are used for client sign-off, investor presentations, pre-launch marketing, and packaging design.

Good renders show the product in context — in the environment it will be used, with the materials and finishes it will have in production. They are not decorative; they are decision-making tools.

Stage 6: CAD and Technical Documentation

The final stage before manufacturing is CAD — Computer Aided Design. This is the production of precise, dimensioned technical drawings and 3D files in formats that manufacturers can work with directly.

CAD documentation includes: full 3D model files (STEP, IGES, native format), 2D technical drawings with all dimensions and tolerances, bill of materials, assembly drawings, and surface finish specifications.

This package is what goes to your manufacturer. If it is done correctly, production can begin without further questions. If it is done poorly, you will spend weeks in revision cycles with the factory — which costs money and delays your launch.

Stage 7: Prototype and Production

With CAD complete, a prototype is produced — either through 3D printing, CNC machining, or early production tooling depending on the material and complexity. The prototype is tested, any final design adjustments are made, and then production begins.

The quality of the design documentation handed to the manufacturer determines the quality of what comes off the production line. Garbage in, garbage out — no matter how good the factory is.
